A first time mom visiting our message boards recently asked:
I need some advice. I don't know what to expect. Can
anyone help me?
Heather, I think that you first can expect to have a baby. Then you
can expect to give up a lot of sleep and have your laundry double or even triple
overnight. And you'll learn what it's like to have your heart walking around outside your
body. And how you can love so much it hurts. You'll learn about weight that may never go
away. And, if you breastfeed, you'll learn how to whip it out fast and so discreetly that
some people that are around you won't even be aware of what you are doing. If you bottle
feed, you'll be able to mix formula correctly in the dark with one eye open.
Later on you'll learn that the best things to have on hand are
bandaids and children's Tylenol. And the first number on your speed dial will be your
pediatrician. And you'll figure out how to dress something that resembles a ticked off
octopus moving all 8 tentacles at once. Bubbly kisses are the best. Checking on a baby in
the middle of the night to make sure she's still breathing. Strained squash makes an
interesting looking stain if not treated right away. We don't even talk about strained
beets.
Then you worry about them walking into the street. Or you worry
about them not walking. Same thing with toilet training. And that can happen in the street
too. School starts and you KNOW you're in the wrong place. I mean, PTA is my mom's job,
not mine. You'll learn about heart breaks that bullies can bring. And that struggling to
learn bring. And the button bursting joy of accomplishment! And you'll loathe science
fairs. (maybe not. I do.)
And then you'll catch up to where I am. Katie has had her first
wreck. We all walked away from it uninjured. The car was totaled. Boys are trolling around
here constantly. Mostly for Katie, but it has begun for Sarah. Sarah has begun worrying
about clothes. She was a tomboy just yesterday, I promise.
And through all of this, if you are very lucky, you will realize
that you are privy to a miracle. The miracle of life.
